University debating
Russell McVeagh sponsors the New Zealand Universities’ Debating Council, the umbrella organisation for University debating in New Zealand. The Council organises a number of regional competitions each year including Easters, Joynt Scroll and the Victoria Intervarsity British Parliamentary Debating Tournament.
Schools debating
Russell McVeagh has for over ten years been the sole sponsor of secondary schools’ debating in New Zealand through the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Council, which, since its establishment in 1988, has worked to promote debating in secondary schools. The Council is responsible for Regional Championships and the National Secondary Schools’ Debating Championships.
At the National Championships, the four best debaters are chosen to represent at the World Schools Debating Championships, usually held in January each year. The team’s attendance at this international competition is also sponsored by Russell McVeagh.
Russell McVeagh also sponsors the Auckland Schools Debating Competition, the largest regular debating competition operating in New Zealand, catering to well over 1,000 students throughout the Auckland region. Their valuable financial contribution allows schools’ debating to prosper. The competition has produced some of the most successful debaters in the country.
