Australs 2010 Registration Details

by brad on March 15, 2010

The University of Auckland Debating Society Organising Committee is excited to announce registration details for the 2010 Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships.

Tournament Cap:

The team cap for this tournament will be 100 teams.

There will be no judges’ cap for this tournament, but the ‘n-1′ rule applies. This means squads wishing to send four teams must send three judges; squads sending three teams send two judges, and so forth.

Registration Costs:

Registration costs for Auckland Australs 2010 will be as follows:

Debaters: $700NZD

Adjudicators: $700NZD

Observers: $750NZD

These prices are the New Zealand Dollar equivalent to $550 AUD at the time of writing.

Pre-registration Phase I: Online registration April 01 -April 16

The pre-registration phase will allow institutions to secure a certain number of team, adjudicator and observer spots for their squad. We strongly encourage pre-registration as demand for this tournament is high, and it is an easy way to ensure that your spots for the tournament are secured.

During the initial pre-registration period there will be a per institution cap of three teams each. Teams will be allocated on a first in, first served basis. Institutions may indicate at this stage if they wish to send more than three teams. These teams will go on a waiting list.

If our team cap is not reached during this phase, we will go to the top of the waiting list and allocate a fourth team to any institution who desires one. If the team cap is still not reached we will consider repeating this process as necessary to reach our tournament cap up to a maximum of six teams per campus.

In the alternative, if the team cap is reached during pre-registration, then as universities decide to send fewer teams/drop out, spaces will be offered to teams on the waiting list. Priority will be given to universities who are not currently represented at the tournament over extra teams for campuses already represented. Teams will be given one week to confirm their continued interest and deposits will be due at the standard time.

Pre-registration Phase II: Deposits will be due April 30

Upon pre-registration teams will be invoiced for a deposit. That deposit will be payable before April 30, although contingents also have the option to pay the full registration costs for pre-registered participants at this stage.

Deposit amounts will be:

$150 NZD per team

$50 NZD per adjudicator

$50 NZD per observer

Teams who do not pay the deposit on time risk losing their place at the tournament. Our payment transfer details will be made available when you complete your pre-registration form.

Payment of deposits per team and per judge during this phase secures those team and judge slots for the tournament.

Deposit Waiver Scheme

We recognise the difficulties which some contingents face in securing funding for the tournament. It is for this reason that we will continue with a ‘Deposit Waiver Scheme’ in 2010.

Institutions will be allowed to pre-register a single team with no deposit in cases where they believe they will have financial difficulty in attending the tournament. This is to allow teams a chance to explore funding opportunities while having a guaranteed spot on offer.

Contingents which require a waiver must send an email explaining their circumstances to info@australs2010.com before April 16.

Full registration: May 01 – May 23

Contingents who have pre-registered should pay the remainder of their registration fees at this stage. Depending on capacity, contingents may also have the opportunity to register more team, adjudicator and observer spots.

Contingents who have not pre-registered participants may register and pay for spots on a first in, first served basis.

Individual Registration: May 01 – May 23

We will require contingent organisers to register the details of all individual participants at the tournament before May 23. This will enable us to cater for rooming preferences and dietary requirements.

Late Registration: May 23 – June 30

If places are still available after the pre-registration and registration period then registration will stay open but any registrations from 1 June will incur a late payment surcharge of 50 NZD per attendee.
